What Is a Single Dental Implant?

A single dental implant is used to replace one missing tooth. It is designed to look, feel, and function like a natural tooth.

The implant has three main parts:

Implant post: A small titanium post placed in the jawbone that acts like the tooth root.
Abutment: A connector piece that attaches to the implant.
Crown: The visible tooth that is custom-made to match your smile.

Together, these parts replace the missing tooth from the root to the top of the tooth.

When Is a Dental Implant Needed?

A single dental implant may be recommended when one tooth is missing or cannot be saved.

Common reasons include:

  • A tooth was lost from an accident or injury

  • A tooth has severe decay

  • A tooth is cracked or broken beyond repair

  • A tooth has an infection and cannot be saved

  • A baby tooth never had an adult tooth underneath it

  • Gum disease has caused a tooth to become loose

Why Replace a Missing Tooth?

Replacing a missing tooth is important for your oral health. When a tooth is missing, nearby teeth can shift into the empty space. This can affect your bite and make it harder to chew.

A missing tooth can also cause bone loss in the jaw over time. A dental implant helps support the bone and keeps the replacement tooth stable.

Benefits of a Single Dental Implant

A dental implant can:

  • Look like a natural tooth

  • Help you chew more comfortably

  • Keep nearby teeth from shifting

  • Help support the jawbone

  • Stay fixed in place

  • Replace a tooth without cutting down the teeth next to it

What Is the Process?

The process usually starts with an exam and X-rays or 3D imaging. If the tooth is still present, it may need to be removed first.

The implant is then placed in the jawbone and allowed to heal. After healing, a custom crown is attached to the implant.

Your dentist will explain each step and let you know what is best for your specific situation.

Is a Dental Implant Right for Me?

Many patients are good candidates for dental implants. You may be a candidate if you have healthy gums, enough bone, and good overall oral health.

A consultation is the best way to find out if a single dental implant is the right choice for you.
